Southwest Monsoon Effects Weaken This Weekend, Providing Relief
The southwest monsoon effects, locally called the “habagat,” are expected to weaken this weekend, offering a much-needed break from the recent heavy rains that have impacted various parts of the country, local sources said. Residents should stay alert, however, as the southwest monsoon effects may still bring some rainfall before easing.
PAGASA weather expert Benison Estareja highlighted that on Independence Day, June 12, the habagat could deliver moderate to heavy rains ranging between 50 to 100 millimeters over areas such as Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. To put it simply, this rainfall amount is like pouring four to eight pails of water on every square meter in a day.
Flash Floods and Landslides Remain Risks
Such significant rainfall increases the chances of flash floods and landslides, especially in high-risk zones. The public is urged to stay vigilant, particularly during heavy downpours, Estareja emphasized. Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and the Visayas will experience scattered light to moderate rains along with occasional thunderstorms.
Habagat Expected to Gradually Weaken
By Friday, June 13, Estareja noted that the southwest monsoon effects are likely to weaken gradually but may still cause scattered light to moderate rains over northern and western Luzon. The weather is expected to improve from Saturday to Sunday, June 14 to 15, across Luzon, though brief rain showers and thunderstorms could still appear, particularly in Visayas and Mindanao during the afternoon or evening.
Monitoring Cloud Cluster Over Philippine Sea
Additionally, local meteorologists are keeping an eye on a cloud cluster east of the country over the Philippine Sea. This cluster could develop into a low-pressure area within two days. However, as of now, it is not expected to become a tropical cyclone. Continuous monitoring will ensure timely updates if the situation changes.
