Massive Relief Distribution Amid Southwest Monsoon Impact
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has already delivered humanitarian aid worth over P690 million to more than 7.8 million individuals affected by the southwest monsoon and recent storms. This swift response highlights the government’s commitment to assisting communities struck by natural calamities.
DSWD Assistance Secretary Irene Dumlao shared that nearly one million family food packs, along with hygiene kits, sleeping kits, kitchen sets, and family tents, have been handed out to those impacted. “We are continuously coordinating with local government units to ensure timely aid distribution,” she added.
Evacuation Centers and Continued Support
Currently, DSWD monitors 1,093 evacuation centers, prepared to provide additional help as needed. These centers shelter over 111,000 individuals, representing more than 30,000 families, who were displaced by the southwest monsoon and severe tropical storms Crising (Wipha), Dante, and Emong.
Furthermore, more than 86,000 people have sought refuge outside official evacuation sites, underscoring the widespread impact of the weather disturbances. Local leaders noted the importance of sustained assistance to all affected areas.
Extent of Damage and Ongoing Coordination
According to the latest report from DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Management, Information, and Communication (DROMIC), the combined effects of the southwest monsoon and tropical storms have affected over 2.1 million families or roughly 7.8 million individuals nationwide. The Department remains vigilant and ready to provide additional relief supplies, including family food packs and emergency kits.
“We stand ready to respond quickly if more assistance is required,” Dumlao assured. Continuous collaboration with local government units ensures that aid reaches those in urgent need promptly.
Relief Items and Community Impact
The distributed relief packages encompass child-friendly space kits, hygiene kits, women-friendly space kits, sleeping kits, family water filtration kits, and ready-to-eat meals. These efforts aim to address both immediate needs and promote health and safety during displacement.
Families crowding evacuation centers in affected areas like San Mateo, Rizal, have expressed gratitude for the assistance, which helps ease the burden caused by flooding and displacement. Community members reiterated the importance of sustained support as they recover from the recent onslaught.
