Southwest Monsoon to Bring Rain Across Philippines

Southwest monsoon to bring rain across Philippines Friday

MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon, known locally as the habagat, is set to bring rain across the Philippines on Friday, weather authorities said. The habagat is expected to cause wet weather in various parts of the country, affecting many communities.

According to a weather specialist, there is a strong chance of rain from afternoon until evening in Metro Manila and several provinces, including Pangasinan, La Union, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, and most areas in Mimaropa such as Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan.

“So, be cautious of potential flooding or landslides,” the expert warned local residents. Authorities urge the public to stay alert, especially in areas prone to such hazards.

Weather forecast for Luzon, Palawan, and Visayas

The rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies in the morning and noon. Scattered rains and thunderstorms will likely occur from afternoon to evening. This pattern is consistent with the influence of the southwest monsoon.

In the Palawan and Visayas regions, the habagat will bring a high chance of rain, particularly over the Kalayaan and Calamian Islands, Panay Island, Negros Occidental, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. The rest of Palawan and Visayas will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies in the morning with rain expected throughout the day.

Mindanao’s weather outlook amid habagat

The southwest monsoon will also affect parts of Mindanao. Areas such as the Moro Gulf, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur and Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Agusan del Norte are likely to experience rain starting in the morning.

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao is forecast to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of rain and thunderstorms lasting one to two hours.

Low-pressure area outside Philippine jurisdiction

Weather authorities are monitoring a low-pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It is not expected to develop into a tropical depression over the weekend.

The LPA was last detected some 1,685 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon. Experts suggest two possible scenarios: one where the LPA moves slowly toward the PAR, potentially entering over the weekend, and another where a new LPA forms over eastern Luzon within the PAR, possibly absorbing or merging with the current system outside the PAR.

“So that means, early next week, it is possible that we will have another weather system or weather disturbance to monitor here in eastern Luzon in our country,” the specialist explained. “And it will pull the southwest monsoon in the next few days or until the first few days of July, and it will also gradually strengthen, so sometimes we will also have heavy rains in the next few days.”

Residents are advised to stay updated and take necessary precautions as the southwest monsoon continues to affect weather conditions nationwide.
