Stay Alert: Southwest Monsoon Brings Flood Threats
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has urged everyone to stay vigilant against flash floods and landslides as the southwest monsoon affects large parts of the country. Over the next 24 hours, the southwest monsoon, known locally as the “habagat,” is expected to bring cloudy skies accompanied by scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to several regions. This weather pattern is already causing concern among local communities and authorities.
The southwest monsoon will impact the Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, and Pampanga. Residents in these areas should prepare for heavy rain and possible flooding. “Mag-ingat po tayo sa baha at landslide,” locals warned.
How the ITCZ Contributes to Rainfall
Additionally, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where winds from both hemispheres collide, is also influencing weather conditions. The ITCZ is causing cloudy skies, scattered showers, and thunderstorms in southern areas including Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, Sarangani, Davao Occidental, and Davao Oriental. This convergence zone often leads to the formation of rain-bearing clouds and intensified precipitation.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon. The rest of the country is also expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain or localized thunderstorms.
Precautionary Measures and Community Preparedness
Local leaders noted the importance of preparedness to minimize risks. “We encourage communities to monitor weather updates and secure their homes,” officials said. Flash floods and landslides remain the primary hazards during this period, especially in mountainous and low-lying areas.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains and to watch for alerts from authorities. Drainage systems should be cleared to prevent water accumulation. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official sources and remain cautious as the southwest monsoon continues to bring wet weather.
