Squid Game season 1 launched on September 17, 2021, quickly becoming the most watched title on Netflix with 265.2 million views totaling 2.2 billion hours streamed. This immense success marks Squid Game season 3 as the highly anticipated conclusion to the story.
The cast of Squid Game season 3 features Lee Jung-jae reprising his role as Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, Wi Ha-jun portraying Hwang Jun-ho, alongside Kang Ha-neul, Yim Si-wan, Jo Yuri, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Roh Jae-won, and Park Gyu-young. The season follows Gi-hun’s return to the deadly games, driven by personal loss and a new purpose. Meanwhile, the Front Man keeps his identity secret, and the surviving players face new challenges.
No Plans for Squid Game Season 4, Director Confirms
During a June 9 press conference in Seoul, director Hwang Dong-hyuk expressed his gratitude to fans who have supported Squid Game throughout its run. “Five years have passed with Squid Game. I am grateful to the viewers who stayed with us until the very end. All the actors and staff worked hard up until season 3, so please watch over us and support us,” sources reported.
Hwang also confirmed that there will be no Squid Game season 4. “We already discussed this with Netflix. There are no plans to make a season 4. If you watch season 3, you’ll see there doesn’t have to be a next season,” he said. The director teased a clash of values between Seong Ki-hoon and the Front Man, highlighting the intense battle of beliefs about humanity.
Gi-hun’s Transformation and Final Confrontation
Lee Jung-jae urged viewers to focus on Gi-hun’s emotional journey. “Please focus on Gi-hun’s change of mind after he overcomes his friend’s death and the guilt of not being able to save many people in the game. Initially, he wanted to punish those who created the game, but in season 3, he decides what he truly must do. Watch his transformation carefully,” the actor said.
Lee Byung-hun described the Front Man’s role as more intense than ever. “The Front Man sees that Gi-hun still believes in humanity and plans to destroy that hope again. If seasons 2 and 3 form one story, then season 3 is the climax and ending. It’s a full-scale confrontation between the Front Man and Gi-hun, with intense drama throughout,” he explained.
Reflecting on the Impact of Squid Game
Wi Ha-jun reflected on the journey since season 1’s filming in May 2020. “Five years have flown by, and it feels surreal how much time has passed. I’m proud that the show was loved worldwide and honored to be part of content that raised K-content’s global status. I hope it remains in people’s hearts for a long time,” he shared.
Lee Byung-hun expressed mixed feelings about the series’ end. “I often feel bittersweet after finishing projects, but this time, it was different. While promoting in the US, I received warm hospitality unlike anything I’ve experienced before, even after Hollywood projects. It was a fresh and wonderful feeling to see such support,” he noted.
Discussing Squid Game’s widespread appeal, Lee Byung-hun said, “The show takes childhood games to brutal extremes, but people from different cultures connect with its political and social themes. Ultimately, it’s about humanity, a topic everyone can relate to regardless of background.”
Lee Jung-jae added, “I’m thankful to experience Director Hwang’s vast and profound worldview. Balancing such a complex story with emotional depth around social issues and human relationships is remarkable.”
