SRA Seeks Urgent Pesticide Permit for Sugarcane
The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has called on Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel to accelerate the processing of a Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) permit. This permit is crucial for the SRA to acquire P15 million worth of pesticides aimed at controlling the Red Stripe Soft Scale Insect (RSSI) infestation affecting sugarcane farms across Negros and Panay islands.
Officials reported that the permit is necessary because one pesticide included in the planned purchase has not been traditionally used in sugarcane cultivation. Once the FPA permit is granted, the SRA will proceed with the procurement and deployment of these pesticides to affected areas.
Extent of RSSI Infestation and Its Impact
According to data released by the SRA, the RSSI infestation has impacted approximately 3,394.82 hectares of sugarcane fields as of August 11. However, local leaders noted that the actual affected area might be significantly larger, and the full extent of the damage remains unclear.
Community members said that the insect poses a serious threat to sugarcane production, urging farmers to stay alert and report any early signs of infestation immediately. Early detection is vital in preventing the spread of this pest, officials emphasized.
Call for Vigilance Among Sugar Farmers
SRA Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona reiterated the importance of vigilance among sugarcane farmers. “We urge all sugar farmers to remain vigilant against the RSSI. Early detection and timely action can greatly reduce the spread and damage caused by this pest,” he said.
He also highlighted that the fast-tracking of the FPA permit would enable the agency to distribute the necessary pesticides promptly, helping to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and the sugar industry as a whole.
