Steel Bridge Collapse Disrupts Daily Life in Albay Town

Steel Bridge Collapse Shakes Albay Community

CAMALIG, Albay — A steel bridge collapse in Ilawod village has severely disrupted daily life after a gravel-laden hauling truck passed over it on Thursday, August 28, 2025. The incident has left residents struggling with unsafe crossing conditions and halted vehicle traffic, officials reported.

Since the steel bridge collapse, locals have been forced to carefully navigate the damaged structure on foot. The exposed steel and slippery surface have made crossing perilous, especially during rainy weather.

Residents Face Dangerous Crossing Conditions

“It’s really risky and dangerous, especially when it rains. We have no choice but to cross slowly,” said resident Marilou Nicol, expressing concern about the bridge’s current state. Another community member, Lea Morcozo, added, “I hope this gets fixed soon. We’re struggling just to go out and come home.”

The collapse has prevented motorists from passing through, compelling many to leave their vehicles behind and walk. This has caused further inconvenience, impacting access to workplaces, schools, and essential services.

Repair Efforts Underway to Restore Access

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has initiated on-site repairs, welding steel components to stabilize the bridge. The agency aims to complete the restoration within the week, sources said.

Barangay officials have increased monitoring to prevent additional damage and to safeguard pedestrians. Barangay Chairman Edcel Garcia noted, “We are closely monitoring the area. It’s important that we keep the structure safe for the public. We’ll also assign village watchmen to assist people crossing.”

Calls for Stronger, Resilient Replacement

Local leaders emphasized the need for a more robust replacement to avoid future incidents. Camalig Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo Jr. urged the DPWH to ensure the new bridge is sturdier and better equipped to withstand heavy loads and environmental challenges.

The steel bridge collapse has highlighted critical infrastructure vulnerabilities in the area, prompting swift action from authorities and concern from residents. Community members remain hopeful for a speedy resolution so daily routines can return to normal safely.
