Storm Surge Warning in Seven Luzon Areas Due to Emong
Severe Tropical Storm Emong has prompted a storm surge warning in seven Luzon areas, sources said. This warning signals a minimal to moderate risk of storm surge, with waves expected to reach heights between 1 to 2 meters within the next 36 hours.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued the alert early Thursday, urging coastal residents to remain vigilant. The storm surge warning in seven Luzon areas covers provinces vulnerable to rising sea levels and hazardous waves.
Areas Under Storm Surge Warning
The following places in Luzon face possible storm surge impacts:
Batanes includes Basco (Capital), Itbayat, Ivana, Mahatao, Sabtang, and Uyugan.
In Cagayan, the towns on alert are Abulug, Aparri, Ballesteros, Buguey, Calayan, Claveria, Gonzaga, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Ana, Santa Praxedes, and Santa Teresita.
Additionally, Bacarra, Badoc, Bangui, Burgos, Currimao, Laoag City (Capital), Pagudpud, Paoay, and Pasuquin are also on the list.
Ilocos Sur includes Cabugao, Caoayan, City of Candon, City of Vigan (Capital), Magsingal, Narvacan, San Esteban, San Juan (Lapog), San Vicente, Santa, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, Santa Lucia, Santa Maria, Santiago, Santo Domingo, Sinait, and Tagudin.
Pangasinan towns at risk are Agno, Anda, Bani, Binmaley, Bolinao, Burgos, City of Alaminos, Dagupan City, Dasol, Infanta, Labrador, Lingayen (Capital), San Fabian, and Sual.
Lastly, Zambales includes Botolan, Cabangan, Candelaria, Iba (Capital), Masinloc, Palauig, San Antonio, San Felipe, San Narciso, and Santa Cruz.
Pagasa’s Warning and Safety Recommendations
Pagasa warned that the storm surge could cause minimal to moderate damage to communities, coastal and marine infrastructure, and disrupt marine-related activities. Due to the risks, authorities strongly recommend halting all marine operations until conditions improve.
Residents are urged to move to higher ground and avoid low-lying coastal areas prone to storm surge. “Likas na delikado po ang lugar na malapit sa baybayin kaya mag-ingat po tayo,” local leaders noted.
Current Status of Severe Tropical Storm Emong
As of the 8 a.m. advisory, Emong was tracked approximately 245 kilometers west of Bacnotan, La Union. The storm maintained maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 135 kph.
Weather sources also mentioned that Emong could intensify into a typhoon before making landfall over the Ilocos Region late Thursday or early Friday.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise the public to stay updated and prepared.
