Student Fare Discount Boosts Access on MRT and LRT

New Student Fare Discount on MRT and LRT

The Department of Education (DepEd) has pledged strong support to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in rolling out the 50 percent fare discount for students on the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT). This student fare discount program aims to ease the financial burden of commuting for learners across Metro Manila until 2028.

Officials reported that this initiative will promote educational access and equity by lowering transportation costs, enabling students to allocate more resources toward their studies.

Education Secretary Highlights Benefits

Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the positive impact of the student fare discount on families and learners. “When a family saves on transportation costs, it creates more opportunities to use that money for books and educational tools they need. This brings significant relief to our students,” he said.

He added, “DepEd will do its part to ensure schools and parents know about this benefit. We want every learner, from Metro Manila to the farthest regions, to feel the government’s support.”

Coverage and Eligibility

The student fare discount, which began in June 2025, covers all learners from kindergarten through graduate school. It also includes students enrolled in the Alternative Learning System and Special Education (SPED) programs. Community members noted the discount applies every time a student rides the train, with no daily or monthly limits.

To avail of the discount, students simply need to present a valid school ID or enrollment form when boarding the MRT or LRT. This straightforward requirement ensures broad accessibility for eligible learners.

Introducing Special White Beep Cards

Starting this September, students can apply for special white Beep cards at train stations. These cards will automatically apply the 50 percent fare discount, eliminating the need to queue for single-journey tickets. Local leaders highlighted that this innovation will streamline boarding and reduce wait times for student commuters.

Monitoring and Support Measures

The DOTr is tracking student ridership through discounted ticket data to monitor the program’s reach. Officials encourage students who face issues accessing the discount despite eligibility to report concerns via the commuter hotline at 0920-964-3687 or through official social media channels.

Both departments have committed to harmonizing guidelines and enhancing public awareness to maximize the program’s benefits.
