Students Receive 50 Percent Train Fare Discount
Starting Friday, students can enjoy a 50 percent discount on all train rides, transportation officials confirmed. This significant increase in the student train fare discount applies to the major rail lines serving Metro Manila.
The discount covers rides on the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 (LRT-1, LRT-2) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3). This adjustment aims to ease the financial burden on students and their families, especially with the new school year underway.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon shared that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directed the increase from the previous 20 percent discount to 50 percent. “Starting today, students will receive a 50 percent discount, and that will continue unless changes are made,” he said during a media briefing at the LRT-2 Antipolo station.
Importantly, the student train fare discount raised to 50% applies to all students, including those in postgraduate programs. To qualify, students must present a valid ID for the current academic year or a certificate of registration or enrollment.
Discount Applies on Weekends and Holidays
The fare reduction is valid any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. This decision ensures greater accessibility for students who travel outside regular school days.
Single-Journey Ticket Discount Only for Now
However, the discount is currently limited to single-journey tickets purchased at ticket counters. The Beep card system cannot yet process the student fare discount, but authorities are working on a solution to implement it in the coming months.
“For now, students can avail of the discount by purchasing single-journey tickets at the counter,” Dizon explained, adding that efforts are underway to upgrade the system soon.
This measure reflects the government’s commitment to supporting students amid rising costs and the challenges of daily commuting.
