Subic Bay Freeport Launches Pure Battery Electric Buses

Subic Bay Freeport Advances Pure Battery Electric Buses Initiative

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — The Subic Bay Freeport is set to introduce pure battery electric buses (PBEBs) this year as part of its commitment to carbon neutrality. This move marks a significant step toward sustainable transportation within the economic zone.

According to local leaders, the introduction of pure battery electric buses aligns with the freeport’s goal of becoming the first carbon-neutral economic zone in the Philippines. SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose Aliño shared that this initiative reflects their dedication to reducing environmental impact while improving public transit.

New Fleet and Infrastructure Ready for Launch

Last May 13, ten units of these pure battery electric buses arrived at the freeport. Following a road test on May 27, the vehicles were praised for their comfort and accessibility, including features that accommodate persons with disabilities.

The buses were procured through a local automotive distributor and manufactured by a seasoned Chinese bus manufacturer with over three decades of experience in the industry, sources said.

To support these buses, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority is constructing fast electric vehicle charging stations at the motorpool area of the Maintenance and Transportation Department. Additionally, the Department of Energy is donating a charging station to be placed along Argonaut Highway, enhancing the charging infrastructure.

Upgrading Bus Stops and Terminals

The agency has allocated P10 million for rehabilitating existing bus stops and terminals, as well as building new ones. Planned improvements include eight stops in the Central Business District, 16 in the Cubi area, six in theme park zones, 18 at Binictican Housing, and 10 in the Kalayaan Housing area. The project aims for completion by December 2025.

Commitment to Carbon Reduction Goals

The Subic Bay Freeport Authority is committed to cutting its carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. This commitment goes beyond the pure battery electric buses project.

In fact, they are also pursuing a P250-million Carbon Neutral Port Project, which includes installing shore power connections for docked ships, reducing emissions from maritime activities. These efforts underscore the freeport’s broader vision for environmental sustainability and innovation.
