Sugar Worker Arrested After Two Years on the Run
A 51-year-old sugar worker was arrested in Barangay Maquiling, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, May 25, following two years of evading authorities. He was wanted for multiple counts of rape involving a minor in Zamboanga City, according to reports from local law enforcement.
The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office identified the suspect as the No. 1 most wanted individual in Zamboanga City and ranked No. 7 in the Zamboanga Peninsula. The arrest was made based on a warrant dated May 16, 2023, issued by the Zamboanga City Regional Trial Court Branch 15. The warrant specified 15 counts of qualified rape of a minor, for which no bail was recommended.
Details of the Charges and Arrest
In addition to the first warrant, authorities served another warrant charging the suspect with 15 counts of rape by sexual assault. For these, the court set bail at P200,000 per count, totaling P3 million. Police Lt. Col. Alvimar Flores, the Sagay police chief, explained that the suspect had been working as a boat mechanic in Zamboanga City but returned to Negros Occidental in 2023 after learning about the charges against him. He then took up work as a sugar laborer in the province.
The police confirmed the suspect will be handed over to the court that issued the warrants for further legal proceedings. Community leaders emphasize that this arrest marks a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against sexual violence and highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies across the country to track down fugitives.
Law Enforcement’s Commitment to Justice
The successful operation demonstrates the dedication of police forces to bring justice to victims and uphold public safety. Reports indicate that continued cooperation among regional agencies played a crucial role in apprehending the suspect despite his years of evasion.
Authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to wanted persons. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement in ensuring that offenders face appropriate consequences.
