Senate President Escudero Gains Key Support
MANILA — Support for Senate President Chiz Escudero’s leadership in the 20th Congress continues to build, now reaching an estimated 15 to 16 signatures backing a resolution in his favor. This growing endorsement highlights the solidifying confidence within the chamber for Escudero’s direction.
Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito confirmed at a Kapihan sa Senado forum that he has also signed the resolution, emphasizing the importance of respect and courtesy toward the current Senate leadership. “I am part of the leadership being the Deputy Majority Leader at present so maybe as a courtesy and respect to Senate President Escudero I have to stick it out with him,” Ejercito shared in Filipino.
Balancing Loyalty and Respect
Ejercito expressed that his decision to support Escudero was influenced by a sense of delicadeza, trust, and gratitude. “Maybe it’s delicadeza, courtesy, and respect because he gave me trust and confidence that I have to support him,” he added.
However, Ejercito admitted that choosing between Escudero and former Senate President Tito Sotto was challenging. Both leaders have played significant roles in his legislative career, especially as party-mates in the Nationalist People’s Coalition. Ejercito credited Sotto’s leadership with helping pass landmark laws such as the Universal Healthcare Act and the creation of the Department of Human Settlements and Development.
Political Rewards and Positions
When asked about his own position, Ejercito confirmed he is likely to retain his role as Deputy Majority Leader, which may soon become an official office akin to the majority leader’s post. “Most likely. I’ll be retained as Deputy Majority Leader and it will now become an office just like the majority leader,” he stated.
Growing Coalition Behind Escudero
Several senators have openly voiced support for Escudero’s Senate presidency, including Joel Villanueva, Alan Peter Cayetano, and Erwin Tulfo. Ejercito also revealed that Escudero has gained backing from the so-called “siblings bloc” within the Senate. This group includes pairs such as Sen. Mark Villar and Sen. Camille Villar; Sen. Erwin Tulfo and Sen. Raffy Tulfo; Sen. JV Ejercito and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada; as well as Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano and Sen. Pia Cayetano.
Furthermore, Escudero secured the support of the Duterte bloc, with members like Sen. Bato dela Rosa and Sen. Bong Go endorsing his leadership bid.
Outlook on Senate Presidency
Ejercito expressed confidence that if the Senate President election were held today, Escudero would emerge victorious. The growing coalition and endorsements reflect a strong momentum in his favor.
