Supreme Court Contempt Petition Filed Against Larry Gadon

Petition Filed to Cite Larry Gadon in Contempt

MANILA, Philippines — A petition to cite presidential anti-poverty czar Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon in contempt was filed before the Supreme Court (SC) this week. The move follows Gadon’s controversial remarks after the tribunal ruled the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte unconstitutional.

Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, representing Partido Demokratiko Pilipino, initiated the petition. He argued that Gadon’s public statements showed disrespect and undermined the dignity of the high court, especially after its unanimous decision on July 25 that the complaint violated the Constitution’s one-year ban on successive impeachment filings.

Allegations Against Gadon and Others

Topacio highlighted Gadon’s interviews where he accused the Supreme Court of political bias favoring the Duterte family. More specifically, Gadon labeled Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo as “tuta ng mga Duterte” (puppy of the Dutertes), intensifying the insult.

In addition, separate petitions were filed against political analyst Richard Heydarian and Representative Percival Cendaña. Lawyers Mark Tolentino and Rolex Suplico sought their citation for indirect contempt over statements related to the same ruling.

Impact of Gadon’s Remarks and Previous Sanctions

Topacio emphasized Gadon’s role as presidential adviser for poverty alleviation, noting that public officials are held to higher standards and their remarks carry greater weight. “As such, the injurious remarks would have a greater impact than that made by private individuals, thus increasing the damage and disrespect towards the dignity and integrity of this Honorable Court and the Judiciary,” he said.

Previously, the Supreme Court sanctioned Gadon for gross misconduct, fining him ₱150,000 for perjury and accusations based on hearsay. These penalties reflect the court’s intolerance for actions that threaten judicial integrity.

“Wherefore, premises considered, it is respectfully prayed of this Honorable Court to cite Secretary Lorenzo ‘Larry’ Gadon for indirect contempt,” the petition concluded, underscoring the need to uphold respect for the judiciary.
