Supreme Court Orders Comments on Impeachment Complaint
The Supreme Court (SC) has directed Vice President Sara Duterte and lawyer Israelito Torreon to submit their responses regarding the House of Representatives’ appeal to overturn the court’s July 25 decision. The ruling had declared the impeachment complaint unconstitutional.
Duterte and Torreon must comply within 10 non-extendible days upon receipt of the notice. This development puts the impeachment process under close judicial scrutiny as the case unfolds.
House of Representatives Holds Key Role
Impeachment court spokesperson Atty. Reginald Tongol emphasized that the continuation of the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte depends primarily on the House of Representatives. He clarified that the Senate is not currently responsible for moving the process forward.
Despite the 20th Congress officially opening a week ago, the lower chamber has yet to act on the impeachment court’s June 10 order, according to Tongol. This delay leaves the ball firmly in the House’s court as the situation develops.
Senate Prepares for Possible Impeachment Debate
There remains a chance the impeachment against Vice President Duterte will not end by August 6. Tongol shared that senators are preparing for a debate scheduled on that date. He also outlined potential scenarios for the Senate plenary session set for Wednesday, signaling readiness for the next steps.
