Supreme Court Orders Sara Duterte To Comment On Appeal
MANILA, Philippines — The legal team defending Vice President Sara Duterte confirmed their commitment to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive. The court has ordered them to submit comments regarding the appeal filed by the House of Representatives.
“We will comply with the order of the Supreme Court and submit our comment within the period provided,” said Michael Poa, one of Duterte’s defense lawyers, in a text message to local media sources.
House Files Motion For Reconsideration
The House of Representatives, through the Office of the Solicitor General, filed a motion for reconsideration on Monday. This motion seeks to overturn the Supreme Court’s earlier ruling that declared the fourth impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte unconstitutional.
In the motion, the lower chamber urged the Supreme Court to recognize Congress’s constitutional role. They emphasized that as a coequal branch of government, Congress must be allowed to carry out its duty of impeaching and trying public officials.
Strict Deadline Set For Comments
The Supreme Court has instructed Vice President Duterte and her lawyer, Israelito Torreon, to file their comments on the House’s appeal within a non-extendible period of 10 days. This firm deadline underscores the urgency of resolving the legal dispute.
Local leaders noted that this development highlights the ongoing tension between branches of government over impeachment procedures. The Supreme Court’s decision to involve Duterte’s defense team in commenting signals a balanced approach to the issue.
