Supreme Court Investigates Former Judge in Missing Sabungeros Case
MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced on Monday that the Supreme Court (SC) has launched an investigation into the alleged involvement of a former judge in the missing sabungeros case. The four-word keyphrase “missing sabungeros case” appears early, emphasizing the focus of the probe.
Remulla’s statement came after Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, also known as “Totoy,” revealed that a former judge was allegedly facilitating cases for businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang. Patidongan further implicated Ang as one of the individuals connected to the disappearance of the sabungeros, or cockfighting enthusiasts.
Justice Secretary Confirms Supreme Court Inquiry
In a chance interview, Remulla shared that he met with Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo earlier Monday to discuss the matter. “Actually, they are already being investigated by the Supreme Court. The SC has already launched an investigation,” he said in Filipino.
He added, “It’s the certain behaviors we observed that seem inappropriate or harmful to the justice system.” When asked about the number of judges involved, Remulla replied, “Iba-iba,” indicating multiple figures under scrutiny.
SC Seen as Key Ally to Justice System Improvement
Remulla emphasized the Supreme Court’s sensitivity regarding steps needed to improve the country’s justice system. He described the SC as the “best ally” in this investigation, highlighting the collaborative effort to uphold judicial integrity.
“That’s why we’re always aligned when it comes to improving the justice system. And the Supreme Court is the best ally that we have for this,” he said.
Efforts to obtain an official confirmation from the Supreme Court about the investigation remain pending as of this report.
Background: Revelations from Suspected Security Guard
The developments followed Patidongan’s shocking confession. As one of six security guards accused of abducting the sabungeros, he claimed that the missing individuals are already dead and their remains were disposed of in Taal Lake, Batangas.
Moreover, Patidongan implicated Ang, actress Gretchen Barretto, a former judge, a former local government official, and several police officers in the case. These accusations have intensified the investigation’s scope and public interest.
