Surigao del Norte Police Arrest Former NPA Commander
BUTUAN CITY – The Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office recently arrested a former high-ranking New People’s Army (NPA) leader who had avoided capture for years. This significant breakthrough came after an intense manhunt operation, leading to the detention of Pio Gato Jr., also known as Jama, 41 years old.
Police Col. Warren Dablo, head of the Surigao del Norte Police, confirmed that Gato was the former commanding officer of NPA Guerrilla Front 16-A under the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee. The arrest took place last Monday in Barangay Talisay, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, led by the 1st Surigao del Norte Provincial Mobile Force Company.
Multiple Criminal Charges Await Suspect
Authorities revealed that Gato faces several charges, including murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder. These charges stem from multiple outstanding warrants issued by courts in Agusan del Norte and Surigao City. Local officials emphasized that Gato’s involvement in violent acts has long posed threats to peace and security in the region.
Col. Dablo detailed that the suspect was responsible for a deadly attack on the Alegria Municipal Police Station on July 10, 2014. During this assault, the attackers seized 17 light weapons and various firearms, seriously injuring two police officers. After the raid, Gato’s group also kidnapped four police personnel in Barangay Pungtod, Alegria.
Key Incidents Linked to Former NPA Commander
Moreover, Gato allegedly led an attack against the Taganito Mining Corporation on October 3, 2011, causing approximately P580 million in damages. This act severely impacted the local economy and heightened security concerns.
Col. Dablo also noted, “He was also identified as the NPA leader behind an ambush on Army troops in Sison, Surigao del Norte, in 2013, and the burning of a copra-loaded truck in Barangay San Juan, Alegria town.”
Currently, Gato remains in the custody of the 1st Surigao del Norte Provincial Mobile Force Company. Authorities are preparing for his legal proceedings and further investigation.
This arrest marks a major victory for law enforcement agencies working to dismantle insurgent groups that disrupt peace in Mindanao. Local leaders expressed relief, hoping this will pave the way for lasting security and development in Surigao del Norte and neighboring provinces.
