Suspect Killed in Police Officers Killing Encounter in Cagayan
BAGGAO, Cagayan – Edison Bayumbon, also known as “Xander,” was shot dead during a police operation in Barangay Bacagan, Baggao, Cagayan, after being tagged in the killing of two police officers in Bocaue, Bulacan earlier this year. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to bring justice to slain law enforcers.
Authorities from the Cagayan Police Provincial Office (CPPO) reported that Bayumbon opened fire on officers who were serving a warrant of arrest against him. Police returned fire, resulting in his death. This encounter marks a significant development in the case involving the death of Police Staff Sgt. Dennis Cudiamat and Police Staff Sgt. Gian George dela Cruz.
Details of the Operation and Investigation
The fatal encounter happened after a two-week surveillance operation aimed at locating Bayumbon, who was believed to be hiding in Barangay Bacagan. Notably, one of his siblings recently got married in the same area, which may have influenced his choice of refuge.
Recovered from the scene was a Glock pistol with the serial number PNP50742, believed to belong to one of the deceased police officers. The police continue to investigate whether Bayumbon acted alone or had accomplices in the murder of the two officers.
Messages from Authorities and Community
Police Regional Office-2 chief, Police Brig. Gen. Antonio Marallag Jr., emphasized that criminals cannot find sanctuary in Cagayan Valley. He stated, “The suspect’s death sends a strong message – Cagayan Valley is not a refuge for criminals. More importantly, this is a victory for justice for Cudiamat, Dela Cruz, and their grieving families.”
Marallag also praised the police units involved and the residents of Barangay Bacagan for providing crucial information that led to the successful operation. The community’s cooperation proved vital in this law enforcement effort.
Continuing Efforts for Justice
Police remain committed to thorough investigations to uncover all details surrounding the killing of the two officers. The operation reflects the intensified drive to uphold law and order and protect the welfare of police personnel.
