Two Suspected Scammers Arrested in Pasay City
Authorities have apprehended two suspected scammers who allegedly tricked a woman into handing over valuables worth P500,000. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Pasay City arrested Maverick Das Punjabi and Jazpher Macaraig Rayos last May 27. The case highlights the growing concern over fraud schemes targeting innocent victims.
The NBI charged the suspects before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office with large-scale estafa, citing violations of Article 315, paragraph 2(a) of the Revised Penal Code. They are also facing charges under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, specifically for computer-related identity theft.
Details of the Scam and Charges
The operation stemmed from a complaint filed by the president of a Filipino Indian community organization and a female victim. According to reports, the suspect Punjabi claimed to be both the nephew and agent of the community leader, who supposedly owned a lending company. He promised to secure a loan worth P20 million, asking for a facilitation fee upfront.
Convinced by these claims, the victim handed over a Hermes Birkin handbag valued at P500,000 as payment. However, she later discovered through a friend that the community leader had no involvement in any lending business. Upon confirming with the real leader, it became clear that the suspect was impersonating him.
Further Investigation and Additional Suspects
Following these revelations, the victim and the genuine community leader approached the NBI to report the fraud. The suspect had also demanded an extra P42,000 as an additional fee, which prompted the complaint. Authorities revealed that two other individuals, identified as Marco de Guzman and a person known only as Voltaire, remain at large and are linked to the case.
The NBI continues to investigate this incident as part of its efforts to combat fraud and cybercrime. They urge the public to remain vigilant against similar scams and report suspicious activities promptly.
