Massive Drug Busts Uncover Shabu Hidden in Tea Bags
Authorities seized more than P680 million worth of suspected shabu concealed inside glossy tea bags during a buy-bust operation in Angeles City, Pampanga. The unusual packaging, referred to as “tsaa-bu,” was part of a haul weighing approximately 100 kilograms.
Two suspects were apprehended during the operation: a 31-year-old Chinese national and his 24-year-old Filipino companion. Both now face charges related to the sale and possession of illegal drugs.
Shabu in Tea Bags: A Common Smuggling Tactic
The raid took place in Barangay Sto. Domingo, a bustling residential and commercial area. Officials explained that these tea bags are often used to traffic or transport drugs across countries, depending on the syndicate’s route.
“’Yung mga teabags… either traffic or transit lang siya kahit saang bansa. Minsan Vietnam, Malaysia, depende sa track ng sindikato,” said a regional anti-drug official.
Local police believe the seized shabu could have been distributed in the Visayas or Mindanao if the operation had not stopped the shipment.
“Malaking impact ito, 101 kilos — kung makakalabas — mabuti at di natuloy ang distribution nito,” stated a police director.
Additional Seizure in Bulacan Reveals Syndicate Links
In a separate but related incident, police recovered about 30 kilos of suspected shabu also hidden in tea bags in Norzagaray, Bulacan. Three suspects—two women and a man—were arrested, and their vehicle was impounded.
Authorities revealed the group had been communicating with a foreign national believed to be the syndicate’s mastermind.
“Ang talagang kausap daw nila is ‘yung sinasabi na Chinese,” said the local police chief.
This method of concealing drugs in green tea bags is not new. Law enforcement noted that syndicates from the Golden Triangle region—which borders Thailand, China, Laos, and Myanmar—frequently employ such distinctive packaging.
Ongoing Investigations Target Syndicate Leaders
Investigations continue as authorities intensify efforts to locate and arrest the leaders behind these drug operations. The use of tea bags to hide shabu has become a notable tactic in drug smuggling, complicating efforts to intercept these shipments.
