More Suspected Shabu Packs Found Floating in West Philippine Sea
DAGUPAN CITY – Authorities reported the discovery of more suspected shabu packs floating in the West Philippine Sea off Pangasinan on Saturday, June 7. The recent find adds to the growing number of illegal drugs recovered in the area, underscoring ongoing challenges in coastal security.
Fishermen handed over 21 additional packs of suspected shabu to authorities, bringing the total to 28 packs recovered in just days. Previously, seven packs valued at approximately ₱1.17 billion were retrieved from the same coastal waters. Officials have yet to release an estimated value for the new contraband, but sources said it could also amount to billions of pesos.
Coast Guard and Police Collaborate for Drug Recovery
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), alongside Coast Guard Pangasinan and its Bolinao sub-station, worked closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and other supportive units during the operation. PCG maritime patrols ensured the safe turnover of the seized drugs.
Local leaders noted the strong cooperation of the fishing community, which played a crucial role in reporting and surrendering the suspicious packages. This vigilance has been vital in intercepting such shipments before they reach inland markets.
Heightened Security and Community Engagement Efforts
Coast Guard District Northwestern Luzon commander Capt. Mark Larsen Mariano emphasized that intensified coastal security patrols and community engagement remain ongoing. These efforts aim to empower residents and fishermen to spot and report suspicious activities at sea promptly.
Authorities reminded the public that possessing or tampering with suspicious packages is punishable by law. They urged immediate reporting of any such findings to the nearest Coast Guard station to prevent legal consequences and aid investigations.
Meanwhile, investigations continue to trace the source and intended recipients of the illegal drugs recovered. Officials remain vigilant to curb the influx of narcotics through coastal areas.
