SUV Driver Temporarily Released on Bail
The driver involved in the SUV crash at the departure area of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which resulted in the deaths of two individuals, has been temporarily freed after posting bail. The incident tragically claimed the lives of two victims, including a young child whose parent was an overseas Filipino worker about to leave the country.
According to a police official from the Aviation Security Group, the driver, who was detained at NAIA Police Station 1, was released following a court order from the Regional Trial Court in Pasay City. “The accused posted corresponding cash bond amounting to PhP100,000.00 for his provisional liberty,” the official stated.
Medical Examination Conducted Before Release
Before his release, the driver underwent a physical and medical examination at Pasay City General Hospital. This was done to assess his condition and ensure he had not sustained any injuries while in police custody.
Details of the NAIA Departure Collision Incident
The accident occurred on May 4, when a 47-year-old driver from Batangas lost control of his SUV and struck pedestrians at the Departure West Curbside Area of NAIA Terminal 1. The crash resulted in two fatalities and left four others injured.
Attempts to stop the SUV using metal bollards failed, as eyewitnesses and experts noted the barriers seemed inadequately installed, being too shallow to effectively block the vehicle.
Investigation into Safety Barriers
Following the tragedy, authorities ordered an investigation into the installation and effectiveness of the bollards at the airport. This inquiry aims to determine if proper safety measures were in place to prevent such incidents.
Legal Charges Filed Against the Driver
The driver now faces multiple charges, including reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property under the Revised Penal Code. The case continues to unfold as the investigation proceeds.
