Sharp Rise in Taal Volcano Seismic Activity
Authorities reported a sharp rise in Taal Volcano seismic activity in Batangas, raising concerns among local residents and officials. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 31 volcanic earthquakes and 30 volcanic tremors within a 24-hour period.
These tremors, each lasting about one minute, signal heightened unrest beneath the volcano. Officials highlighted that this surge in seismic events is significant compared to earlier data.
Seismic Trends Over Recent Weeks
From August 9 to 12, Taal Volcano Network (TVN) stations logged 19 volcanic earthquakes and 21 volcanic tremors, demonstrating a clear upward trend. Previously, from August 1 to 9, only four earthquakes and a single tremor were recorded.
Local leaders noted this escalation as a cause for vigilance, urging communities to stay alert and prepared for possible volcanic activity.
Understanding Volcanic Earthquakes and Tremors
Phivolcs defines volcanic earthquakes as those generated by magmatic or magma-related processes beneath or near an active volcano. These seismic events often indicate movement of magma or changes within the volcano’s structure.
Continuous volcanic tremors, meanwhile, suggest sustained underground activity. The recent increase in real-time seismic energy measurement (RSAM) confirms that the volcano is becoming more restless.
Precautionary Measures and Advisory Updates
Following the surge, Phivolcs issued advisories emphasizing the need for close monitoring. Community members said, “Laging handa po tayo lalo na sa ganitong mga senyales.” This reminder underscores the importance of readiness amid evolving volcanic conditions.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic data closely to provide timely warnings and ensure public safety.
