Taal Volcano Shows Increased Seismic Activity Alert

Taal Volcano in Batangas has exhibited increased seismic activity, officials reported. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded numerous volcanic earthquakes and tremors over the past 24 hours, signaling that the volcano remains restless.

According to sources, a total of 38 volcanic earthquakes and 12 volcanic tremors were documented in the recent monitoring period. These tremors lasted between 2 and 14 minutes, while a sustained tremor that began on August 27 has since stopped. However, Thursday alone saw 24 volcanic tremors, showing persistent underground movement.

Understanding Volcanic Earthquakes and Tremors

Experts explained that volcanic earthquakes occur due to the movement of magma or volcanic gases beneath the surface. These earthquakes have distinct seismic patterns characterized by their arrival time, duration, and amplitude. On the other hand, volcanic tremors are continuous seismic signals with low frequencies and can have either regular or irregular waveforms, indicating ongoing volcanic unrest.

Current Alert Status and Volcanic Emissions

Despite the uptick in seismic events, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, reflecting low-level unrest. Authorities emphasized that this status does not imply the volcano has returned to normal or that the risk of eruption has been removed. Community members were reminded to stay vigilant and monitor updates.

In addition to seismic activity, officials reported a moderate emission of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) from Taal’s main crater. The emission reached 3,356 metric tons, generating a plume that rose up to 1,500 meters above the crater. No volcanic smog (vog) or surface activity such as hot fluid upwelling was observed during this period.

Taal Volcano’s Significance and History

Located at the center of Taal Lake, this volcano is the country’s second most active, with 38 recorded eruptions throughout Philippine history. Its unique position within a lake makes it an especially monitored natural feature due to potential hazards to surrounding communities.

Local leaders noted the importance of preparedness and continuous observation given the volcano’s active status. Residents and visitors alike are urged to heed official warnings and avoid restricted zones.
