Tragedy Strikes Tagaytay City Landslide Amid Heavy Rains
A devastating Tagaytay City landslide claimed the life of a construction worker, left one injured, and left two others missing on Thursday. The incident occurred due to persistent heavy rains, local authorities reported on Friday.
According to the Calabarzon Police Regional Office (PRO-4A) citing regional sources, an avalanche of soil and rocks collapsed a perimeter wall, burying a workers’ barrack in Barangay Iruhin West around 10 a.m. Rescue teams immediately responded to recover the trapped workers.
Rescue Operations Ongoing Amidst Unstable Conditions
Captain Michelle Bastawang, assistant chief of the Cavite Police Community Affairs and Development Unit, informed that rescue efforts uncovered one worker dead beneath the debris. Another worker was successfully rescued, but two remain missing as search and retrieval operations continue.
“Police retrieval operation is still ongoing,” Bastawang said in a message to news outlets.
Heavy Rains and Severe Tropical Storm Emong Intensify Risks
The calamity is part of the broader impact of the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” which has been worsened by Severe Tropical Storm Emong. These weather conditions have caused widespread heavy rains in the Cavite area, raising concerns over further landslides and flooding.
Local leaders noted the urgency of monitoring vulnerable areas to prevent additional casualties. They also urged residents and workers in high-risk zones to exercise caution and follow safety protocols.
Community Response and Safety Measures
Authorities continue to prioritize the search for the missing workers while assessing the stability of the affected site. Evacuation and preventive measures are being reinforced to protect nearby communities from similar hazards.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by extreme weather events in the region and the importance of disaster preparedness.
