Taguig Police Act Swiftly After Armed Robbery in BGC
Taguig police quickly responded after armed robbers targeted two Korean nationals in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Barangay Fort Bonifacio, Taguig, on May 17. The incident raised concerns from South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korean Embassy in the Philippines, prompting them to issue a travel advisory warning about the increasing violent crimes in Metro Manila.
The armed robbery occurred around 11:40 p.m. on 9th Avenue, near One Park Drive in BGC. Four suspects on two motorcycles approached the victims and fled with expensive bags and cash. Local authorities later confirmed that the stolen luxury crossbody bags were valued at around P200,000.
Investigation and Suspect Identification Underway
Immediately after the crime, investigators reviewed CCTV footage from BGC and nearby areas while tracking teams followed possible escape routes into Makati and Manila. Within 24 hours, police identified two suspects through intelligence and surveillance efforts. A robbery case was subsequently filed against them at the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office on May 21.
“This swift identification and filing of charges reflect the Taguig PNP’s strong operational capability and commitment to delivering timely justice,” Taguig police said. They added that investigations continue to locate and arrest the remaining suspects. Authorities urge the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities directly to the nearest police precinct or through official hotlines.
Safety Concerns for Korean Nationals Rise
The Korean embassy’s travel advisory highlighted the growing concerns over armed robberies all over Metro Manila, especially in areas like Pasay, Makati, and Malate. The embassy noted, “Recently, there has been growing concern over the continuous occurrence of gun robberies regardless of time and place. This incident is alarming as it marks the first gun robbery targeting our citizens in BGC, which was considered relatively safe.”
The advisory urged Korean nationals to avoid unnecessary nighttime travel and to refrain from wearing flashy luxury items due to increased risks to personal safety.
Significance for Philippine Tourism
South Korea remains the Philippines’ top source of inbound tourists. According to tourism officials, 1.57 million Korean visitors arrived in the country in 2024, up from 1.45 million in 2023. They accounted for 26.46% of the total 5.95 million foreign arrivals, underscoring the importance of ensuring their safety amidst rising crime concerns.
