Taxi Severely Damaged After Container Falls From Trailer Truck
Just after midnight on June 14, a taxi was badly crushed when a container fell onto its roof from a trailer truck in Manila. The incident took place along Abad Santos Avenue, where the truck struck a footbridge, causing the container to drop directly onto the taxi.
CCTV footage shows the taxi turning left onto Recto Avenue around 12 a.m. when the trailer truck passed by and collided with the footbridge. The taxi driver, 60-year-old Lito Sinco, had just dropped off passengers and was heading home to Taytay, Rizal when the accident occurred. Thankfully, he was unhurt despite the heavy damage to his taxi. Authorities quickly responded, with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel arriving around 2 a.m.
MMDA officials immediately shut down the area to manage the scene. They worked to lift the container back onto the trailer truck, ensuring the road was safe to reopen. Both the taxi driver and the trailer truck operator were taken to the Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit for investigation.
Possible Cause: Road Conditions
Initial statements from both drivers revealed the truck had previously passed the same route without incident. Local leaders noted that recent asphalt resurfacing might have raised the road level slightly, causing the container to hit the footbridge. This subtle change in road height may have contributed to the accident.
Authorities are looking into these factors to prevent similar incidents. This event serves as a reminder of the risks that infrastructure changes can pose to traffic safety.
