Teen Arrested for Theft and Sextortion in Catbalogan City
TACLOBAN CITY—Authorities arrested a 19-year-old male suspect involved in theft and sextortion in Barangay 7, Catbalogan City, Samar, officials reported on Thursday, September 4. The arrest followed a complaint from a student who reported her stolen mobile phone last month.
The Catbalogan City Police Station (CPS) said the victim, a 22-year-old student known by the alias “Shay” from Barangay Canlapwas, lost her cellphone on August 16. Later, she discovered that the suspect, identified as “Jordan,” also from Barangay Canlapwas, had possession of the device.
Suspect Demands Sexual Favors for Phone Return
Police sources revealed that the suspect contacted the victim online and allegedly demanded sexual favors in exchange for returning the stolen mobile phone. Disturbed by this, the victim sought assistance from a witness to help resolve the situation.
Together, they arranged a meeting with the suspect to recover the phone. During the encounter, the witness successfully apprehended the suspect before police officers patrolling nearby arrived to take him into custody.
Police Commended for Swift Action
Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy, director of Police Regional Office 8, praised the Catbalogan CPS for their prompt response. “The swift response by the Catbalogan CPS is proof that police presence in the community is of great help during similar incidents,” he said. “Their conduct of mobile patrolling confirms that our police officers are effective in deterring crime and keeping our region safe.”
The suspect remains detained at the Catbalogan CPS and faces criminal charges for theft and sextortion, community members said.
