Three Die in Calabarzon Amid Southwest Monsoon
Three people lost their lives—two from suspected drowning and one from electrocution—while another remains missing in separate incidents across Rizal, Cavite, and Batangas provinces on Tuesday. These tragic events unfolded following the strong impact of the southwest monsoon.
Local police reports confirm the southwest monsoon caused dangerous conditions that led to these fatal accidents. A 16-year-old girl, known only as “Lyka,” went swimming with friends in a river in Barangay Calibuyo, Tanza, Cavite, despite warnings about the strong currents and worsening weather.
At around 4 p.m., Philippine Coast Guard personnel found Lyka’s body downstream, tangled in water lilies. Authorities ruled the incident a drowning, as no foul play was evident on her body.
Drowning Victims Found in Rizal
In Tanay, Rizal, a fisherman discovered the body of an unidentified boy floating in a lake at Barangay San Isidro at 10:40 a.m. Officials estimate the child to be between 7 and 12 years old. Investigations are ongoing to determine if this boy matches reports of a missing child from a prior drowning in nearby Morong town.
The body will undergo a thorough post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Electrocution Fatality in San Mateo
Meanwhile, in San Mateo, Rizal, a 20-year-old man named “Ralph” died after being electrocuted around 9 a.m. while repairing galvanized iron sheets on his roof in Barangay Sta. Ana. His home had suffered damage from flooding caused by the monsoon rains.
Ralph accidentally touched a live electrical wire connected to a nearby post. Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.
Ongoing Search for Missing Fisherman in Batangas
In Batangas’ Nasugbu town, a 35-year-old man named “Romel” went fishing with his brother-in-law in a river at Barangay Reparo around 3:45 p.m. Romel tried to cross to the opposite riverbank but was swept away by the swift current and did not resurface.
His companion attempted a rescue but was unsuccessful due to the strong water flow. Search and rescue teams continue to look for Romel as efforts remain underway.
Local authorities emphasize the dangers posed by the southwest monsoon and urge residents to heed warnings and avoid risky activities near bodies of water during this season.
