Three Immigration Officers Under Investigation at NAIA
Three immigration officers assigned at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) are now under investigation after four Chinese nationals tried to bypass immigration inspection, sources said on June 5. The Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed the probe but did not reveal the names of the officers involved.
The four Chinese nationals intercepted last June 2 at NAIA were identified as Zhang Zhaoya, Wang Linmei, Qi Xiangyang, and Chen Wenda. They were caught attempting to board separate flights bound for China and Vietnam but were flagged for immigration violations.
Details of the Immigration Violations
Zhang has been overstaying in the Philippines since July 2024. Meanwhile, Wang and Qi have both exceeded their permitted stay since September 2024. Although Chen held a valid working visa, he lacked the required Emigration Clearance Certificate (ECC), which is mandatory for departing long-term residents.
BI’s Firm Stance on Violations
“Any personnel found to have assisted in the circumvention of immigration procedures will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law,” said Immigration Commissioner Anthony M. Viado. He emphasized that the Bureau is determined to prevent foreign nationals violating immigration laws from escaping accountability.
The BI added that the four Chinese nationals will face charges for violating Philippine immigration rules. They are currently being processed for appropriate legal action.
Strengthening Airport Security Measures
To prevent similar incidents, the BI is implementing additional checks, increasing the use of CCTV monitoring, and enhancing coordination among its units. These measures aim to stop attempts to avoid immigration protocols before passengers board flights.
“We are committed to ensuring strict compliance with immigration laws and preventing illegal departures,” Viado stated.
