Minors Detained in Lanao del Sur Operation
Authorities confirmed that three suspected Daulah Islamiya-Maute Group fighters arrested in Lumbayanague town, Lanao del Sur, over the weekend are minors. The Philippine National Police (PNP) revealed that these three minors are currently under military custody and will soon be transferred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for proper care and intervention.
Details on the Arrest and Encounter
PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III stated in a recent briefing, “In this operation, we have captured minors. Some fighters used by the Maute were also killed in the encounter — a woman died, and a man also died. Some also escaped, and these are the identified.” He further added, “We have three people arrested and in Army custody; we are turning them over to the DSWD for proper intervention.”
Weapons Seized from Suspected Fighters
Officials reported that the suspects were found with an arsenal of high-powered firearms, including M14 and M16 rifles, an M79 grenade launcher, a .45-caliber pistol, hand grenades, RPG blasting caps, and other war materials. These items were confiscated during the operation, highlighting the dangerous capabilities of the group.
Recruitment of Child Fighters: A Known Strategy
Law enforcement sources explained that recruiting child fighters has consistently been part of the Maute Group’s tactics. They noted that the presence of children often causes hesitation during encounters, complicating efforts to neutralize militants safely.
Casualties and Aftermath of Firefight
According to police reports, three other suspected Daulah Islamiya-Maute Group members were killed after opening fire on army troops and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group personnel serving a warrant in Lumbayanague last Saturday. Despite the clash happening in a populated area, authorities confirmed no civilian casualties occurred during the brief firefight.
Next Steps for the Minors
Community members said that the three detained minors will undergo rehabilitation and counseling under the supervision of the DSWD. This approach aims to provide proper intervention and prevent further involvement in armed conflict.
