Tito Sotto Ready To Serve Senate Minority Leader Role

Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III expressed his willingness to take on the role of Senate minority leader if he is not elected as Senate president. The seasoned lawmaker shared this during his oath-taking ceremony at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila.

“I’m fully prepared, if my colleagues don’t elect me as Senate president, I’m ready to serve as minority leader,” Sotto said in a mix of English and Filipino during an informal interview with reporters. His statement confirmed his readiness to embrace the Senate minority leader position, a role he knows well from past experience.

Experience and Independence Shape Sotto’s Stand

Having served as minority leader from 2002 to 2004 and again from 2014 to 2015, Sotto emphasized his familiarity with the responsibilities that come with the position. He pointed out that his time in that role has prepared him to lead the minority bloc with dedication and clarity.

When asked if his alignment with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Senate slate for the 2025 elections might impact his chances for minority leadership, Sotto stressed his independence. “That’s how the Senate raised me — independent. I always advocate for the independence of the Senate, because that’s how you preserve its integrity and reputation,” he explained.

He further added, “You can’t just blindly follow the Palace… you should be cooperative, but critical when necessary.” This statement highlights Sotto’s commitment to balancing cooperation with critical oversight, a key aspect of minority leadership.

Senate Presidency Decision Still Up To Peers

Regarding his intentions to run for Senate president, Sotto left the decision in the hands of his fellow senators. He clarified that he does not actively campaign for the position but waits for his colleagues to offer it, as has happened in the past.

“I’m not like others who actively lobby to become Senate president,” he said. “In my case, I wait, just like what happened in 2017 and with previous Senate presidents, the position is offered to you.”

Sources noted that Sotto’s approach reflects his belief in letting leadership roles come naturally through consensus rather than forceful pursuit.
