Toll Collection Suspended on Marilao Northbound Segment
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Thursday the suspension of toll collection on the Marilao northbound segment of the North Luzon Expressway (Nlex). This action followed a container truck striking the underside of the Marilao Bridge, which compromised the structure.
Following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive, the DOTr immediately ordered Nlex Corporation to halt toll operations on this section. The goal is to prevent further inconvenience to motorists and commuters affected by the incident.
Incident Details and Impact
The accident occurred Wednesday when an oversized container truck hit the bridge’s underside. This caused a girder to collapse onto a red Mitsubishi Adventure traveling below, tragically killing one passenger and injuring six others.
Local authorities confirmed the damage and casualties. The DOTr stressed the urgency of repairing the affected infrastructure to restore smooth traffic flow as soon as possible.
Response and Investigation
The DOTr has instructed Nlex Corp. to provide immediate assistance to the family of the deceased and to those injured. Additionally, the agency demanded an explanation regarding the apparent lack of oversight, especially since a similar accident occurred just three months ago.
“The DOTr requests understanding from all motorists and commuters affected by this event,” the agency stated in Filipino. “We are working swiftly to fix the damage and improve conditions on the road.”
Authorities continue to monitor the repair progress closely to ensure safety and prevent future incidents.
