Top Education Agencies Strengthen Disaster Resilience in Schools

Education Agencies Unite to Boost Disaster Resilience in Schools

In a decisive move to protect learners, the country’s top education agencies have pledged to enhance disaster resilience in schools. This commitment was made during their first-ever Joint National Management Committee (ManCom) meeting held last Friday. Officials emphasized the critical need to shield students from learning disruptions caused by natural calamities.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted the urgency of strengthening disaster resilience in schools, noting that safeguarding students’ education continuity during emergencies is paramount. Representatives from the Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) gathered to discuss coordinated strategies.

Joint Efforts to Protect Student Learning

Community members said the collaboration between these agencies aims to develop comprehensive disaster preparedness plans tailored for educational institutions. They stressed that learning losses during calamities can have long-term effects on student development and academic progress.

Local leaders noted that the agencies intend to implement standardized guidelines and conduct regular drills to ensure schools are ready to respond effectively to disasters. They also plan to integrate disaster risk reduction modules into the curriculum to raise awareness among students and staff.

Implementing Resilience Measures Nationwide

Officials reported that the ManCom meeting marked a significant milestone in uniting various government bodies under a common goal. The agencies agreed to share resources, expertise, and best practices to build safer, more resilient learning environments across the country.

Sources said that beyond infrastructure improvements, the focus also includes psychosocial support for students affected by disasters. This holistic approach aims to address both physical safety and emotional well-being.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Disaster Resilience

Experts underscored the importance of continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure the effectiveness of the disaster resilience initiatives. They encouraged schools to actively participate in capacity-building programs and maintain open communication channels with local disaster management councils.

Community members concluded that by fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience, the education sector can minimize learning losses and protect the future of Filipino students.
