Torrential Rains Sweep Northern Philippines
Heavy rains driven by Tropical Cyclone Crising and the southwest monsoon are set to soak parts of northern and western Philippines, sources said Saturday morning. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that these intense downpours will likely cause severe flooding and landslides.
In Weather Advisory No. 15 issued at 5 a.m., PAGASA reported that Crising is delivering over 200 millimeters of rain to Apayao, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur on Saturday, July 19. These areas face a high risk of flash floods and landslides due to the heavy rainfall.
Flooding and Landslide Risks Expand
Meanwhile, rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 millimeters is expected in Cagayan, Batanes, Benguet, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and La Union today. Local leaders noted that urban and low-lying communities near rivers in these provinces should prepare for flooding. Landslides are also a concern in places prone to soil erosion.
Lighter showers of 50 to 100 millimeters will affect Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino. On Sunday, only Ilocos Norte is forecast to receive this moderate rainfall.
Southwest Monsoon Brings Additional Heavy Rain
At the same time, the southwest monsoon, or habagat, continues to stir heavy rains across western Luzon, Visayas, and Mindoro. Provinces like Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique could see 100 to 200 millimeters of rain Saturday.
Metro Manila and nearby provinces including Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Rizal, along with several Visayan and Mindoro areas, are forecast to experience 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall.
Persistent Rainfall and Flood Warnings
The monsoon rains will continue into Sunday, impacting Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro with 100 to 200 millimeters of rain. Metro Manila, parts of Central Luzon, regions in Mimaropa, and Visayas will also experience moderate showers ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters.
By Monday, July 21, localized flooding and landslides remain a threat in Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
