Torrential Rains From Tropical Storm Crising Threaten Luzon and Visayas
Torrential rains from Tropical Storm Crising and the southwest monsoon are poised to cause widespread flooding and landslides across several parts of Luzon and the Visayas, the state weather bureau warned early Friday. The heavy downpour is expected to hit vulnerable communities, raising concerns over safety and property damage.
According to a 5 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecast over 200 millimeters of rain in Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte. These areas face a high risk of severe flooding and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous zones.
High-Risk Areas Brace for Severe Flooding
Batanes, Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Kalinga, Abra, Quirino, La Union, Aurora, Quezon, and the Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur are expected to receive between 100 and 200 millimeters of rain today. Such heavy rainfall may trigger multiple flooding incidents and landslides, particularly in urbanized areas and communities near rivers.
Meanwhile, Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Catanduanes could see 50 to 100 millimeters of rain, which might cause localized flooding and landslides. Local leaders have urged residents to stay alert and prepare for possible emergencies.
Rainfall Shifts and Monsoon Effects Continue
Crising’s heavy rains are expected to move on Saturday to northern provinces such as Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Batanes, and Cagayan. Lighter rain showers may persist in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur by Sunday, prolonging the risk of flooding in those areas.
At the same time, the southwest monsoon will continue to bring significant rainfall to Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Iloilo, Guimaras, Antique, and Negros Occidental, with amounts reaching 100 to 200 millimeters today. Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, and parts of the Visayas may experience 50 to 100 millimeters, increasing flood concerns in urban centers.
Intensified Rains Expected This Weekend
On Saturday, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique will face intensified rains. The heavy downpour is forecasted to continue into Sunday for Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. This persistent rainfall could worsen existing flood conditions and increase landslide risks.
Weather officials warned that rainfall in mountainous regions may be higher than forecasted. They also noted that areas already affected by previous rains could experience more severe impacts. Authorities are urging the public and disaster management teams to take all necessary precautions to safeguard lives and properties.
