Two Separate Drowning Incidents Shock Cebu Province
CEBU CITY – Two heartbreaking drowning incidents occurred in Cebu province on Saturday, June 7, claiming the lives of a three-year-old boy and a 75-year-old man. These tragic cases unfolded amid continuous heavy rains affecting Metro Cebu due to a low-pressure area and the southwest monsoon.
Young Boy Drowns in Toledo City River
In Sitio Ilag, Barangay Cambang-ug, Toledo City, a young boy lost his life while swimming in a nearby river. According to local sources, the boy’s mother had left him inside their home around 8 a.m. to do laundry. Upon returning, she found him missing and searched for him unsuccessfully.
Later, she came across a Facebook post reporting a child’s body recovered from a river. Authorities then informed her that it was her son, found lifeless about 500 meters from their house. The boy was rushed to Toledo City General Hospital but was declared dead by doctors.
Elderly Farmer Found Dead in Naga River
In a separate incident in Barangay Alpaco, City of Naga, Deonisio Bonghanoy Lapitan, a 75-year-old farmer from Barangay Patag, was found floating in a river. Police believe he drowned after being swept away by the river’s strong current.
Authorities recommended that his family have his body undergo an autopsy to rule out any foul play. Both drowning incidents have raised concerns among local officials about safety measures, especially during the persistent rains.
Weather Conditions and Safety Concerns
The continuous downpour caused by the low-pressure area and the southwest monsoon has led to stronger river currents and hazardous conditions across Metro Cebu. Local leaders urge residents to exercise extreme caution near bodies of water during this period.
These tragic drowning incidents underline the need to increase community awareness and safety protocols, especially for children and elderly residents living near rivers and other water bodies.
