Efforts to Ease New Bilibid Prison Congestion
Two hundred persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) have been relocated from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City to the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro. This transfer is a key part of the ongoing efforts to relieve overcrowding at the NBP.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the 200 inmates arrived safely at the Sablayan facility on May 30. The move supports both the decongestion program and the plan to close the NBP by 2028. Additionally, the transferred inmates will contribute to Sablayan’s agricultural manpower through various institutional projects.
Security and Logistics of the Transfer
The relocation was carried out under tight security. One hundred corrections officers escorted the inmates, with assistance from the Philippine National Police and the South Luzon Expressway security. This coordinated effort ensured a smooth and secure transfer over the long journey.
Earlier, on April 29, around 300 inmates were also moved from NBP to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, signaling a broader strategy to manage inmate populations across multiple facilities.
Preparations Ahead of the Rainy Season
In addition to managing inmate transfers, prison officials have been instructed to prepare their facilities for the upcoming rainy season. Repairs on infrastructure, tree trimming, and securing power supplies are among the preventative measures being taken. These steps aim to reduce risks posed by heavy rains and ensure the safety of both inmates and staff.
By implementing these strategies, authorities hope to maintain order and security while improving conditions at correctional facilities. The ongoing decongestion program reflects a commitment to reforming the prison system and addressing overcrowding challenges head-on.
