New Leadership at Department of Transportation
MANILA, Philippines — Transportation Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez has pledged to uphold the gold standard in leadership set by his predecessor, Vince Dizon, who was recently appointed as Public Works Secretary. This commitment was expressed during the formal turnover ceremony at the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday.
“Secretary Vince’s kind of leadership sets the gold standard that every secretary should follow in every department,” Lopez stated, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing commuters’ welfare and accountability.
Focus on Commuters’ Welfare and Accountability
Lopez shared that working closely with Dizon gave him valuable insights into the daily challenges faced by commuters. “During our surveillance with Secretary Vince, we saw the hardships of commuters, so we must prioritize their interests and welfare,” he said.
He further explained that addressing commuter issues requires direct engagement on the ground. “The only way to solve the commuter’s problems is to go out in the field, see the problem, and fix it in real time,” Lopez added.
Strict Measures Against Reckless Driving
Continuing the legacy of his predecessor, Lopez vowed to maintain strict accountability for irresponsible drivers to ensure the safety of pedestrians, commuters, and motorists alike. “Secretary Vince showed me that accountability saves lives. We need to hold the reckless motorists and drivers on the road accountable. We will not stop this,” the newly appointed secretary declared.
Lopez’s Experience and Appointment
Before his appointment as acting secretary, Giovanni Lopez served as the DOTr undersecretary for administration, finance, and procurement. His appointment by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. came upon the recommendation of Dizon. Lopez also held the position of chief of staff in the Office of the Secretary from 2020 to 2022. Additionally, he managed key railway, aviation, and maritime infrastructure projects during his tenure.
Transition in Public Works Leadership
Meanwhile, Vince Dizon recently assumed the role of secretary at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). He took over following the resignation of former DPWH chief Manuel Bonoan amid controversies surrounding alleged irregularities in flood control projects, officials reported.
Lopez’s vow to continue the gold standard in leadership reflects a commitment to transparency, efficiency, and the public’s welfare as the DOTr navigates new challenges ahead.
