Tree Falls on Passenger Van in Legazpi City
A tragic accident unfolded in Legazpi City on Monday morning, July 28, when a large tree fell on a passenger van, resulting in one death and three injuries. The incident happened in Barangay Padang, bringing attention to the dangers posed by severe weather and unstable terrain.
According to local authorities, the tree that fell was a Tabog tree uprooted by strong winds. The van was traveling from Bacacay town toward Legazpi City at around 10 a.m. when the tree crashed onto its rear section. The victims were seated in this part of the vehicle and bore the worst of the impact.
Passengers Escape Through Windows
Thirteen other passengers managed to escape unharmed by breaking through the van’s windows after the back portion was crushed. Police Executive Master Sergeant Carlos Paña, a spokesperson for the Legazpi City Police, noted that the saturated ground—softened by days of heavy rain—likely contributed to the tree’s collapse.
Residents and local officials have expressed concern over the risks posed by natural elements during the rainy season, urging vigilance and preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
