Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 May Hit Northern Luzon

Fair Weather Prevails Across the Philippines

Fair weather is expected nationwide on Monday, but the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) cautioned that the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 could be raised in parts of extreme northern Luzon. This is due to Severe Tropical Storm Gorio (international name: Podul) moving within the Philippine area of responsibility.

According to officials, the center of Gorio was located approximately 1,305 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon early Monday morning. It is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 135 kilometers per hour. The storm is moving westward at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour.

Potential Impact on Northern Luzon

Weather experts explained that although Gorio is still far from the Philippine landmass, a shift in its track could prompt the raising of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over some northern areas. “Even if Gorio remains far from our landmass, once a significant track changes occur, for example, it would have a southward shift, we are not ruling out raising Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over portions of extreme Northern Luzon, possibly in portions of Batanes and [the] Babuyan Islands,” a Pagasa weather specialist said.

Local authorities noted that residents in these areas should stay alert for any updates in case the signal is raised. The community is advised to prepare for possible gusty winds and isolated rain showers despite the fair weather forecast for most parts of the country.

Gorio’s Movement and Weather Forecast

Pagasa reported that Gorio entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday night and is expected to exit by Wednesday evening or early Thursday. The storm is forecasted to continue moving westward throughout the forecast period, with no direct impact expected on the country’s weather today.

In Metro Manila and other regions, fair weather will prevail with partly cloudy to cloudy skies. There is a chance of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in some areas, but no severe weather is anticipated at this time.

Expected Landfall and Precautionary Measures

Officials also mentioned that Gorio is expected to make landfall in Taiwan within the next few days. Meanwhile, the Philippine government and local agencies remain vigilant, monitoring the storm’s path closely to provide timely warnings if necessary.

Community members in northern Luzon are urged to stay informed through official channels and prepare for any changes in weather conditions. Early preparations could help minimize risks from strong winds and heavy rains should the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 be raised.
