Tropical Depression Crising Prompts Class Suspensions
Several local government units have suspended classes on Friday, July 18, as Tropical Depression Crising intensifies and the southwest monsoon, known locally as habagat, affects many regions. The tropical depression’s approach has raised alerts across the country, urging communities to prepare for heavy rains and strong winds.
According to sources, Tropical Depression Crising is moving west-northwest at 30 kilometers per hour, with sustained winds reaching up to 55 kph and gusts peaking at 70 kph. These conditions have led authorities to take precautionary measures, including class suspensions in vulnerable provinces and cities.
Class Suspensions Across Key Regions
Several areas announced class suspensions to ensure the safety of students and staff. In Central Luzon, Nueva Ecija suspended classes in Talavera from preschool up to senior high school for both public and private institutions.
In Calabarzon, Batangas and Calaca City halted classes at all levels, while Laguna province suspended classes from preschool to senior high school across public and private schools. Rizal’s Morong municipality also suspended all face-to-face classes at every level, advising schools to shift to modular distance learning instead.
Western Visayas and Negros Island Region
Western Visayas saw class suspensions in Antique province and Belison town for students ranging from preschool to senior high school. Meanwhile, in the Negros Island Region, Talisay City in Negros Occidental suspended all levels of classes, and Siquijor province followed suit for all grade levels.
Crising’s Current Location and Expected Landfall
Crising was last tracked approximately 335 kilometers northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, and 545 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora, according to local meteorological sources. The tropical depression is forecasted to make landfall in mainland Cagayan by Friday evening, prompting further warnings for residents and local leaders to stay alert.
As the tropical depression moves closer, authorities continue to monitor weather developments closely and recommend that the public stay updated and prepared for possible flooding, strong winds, and other hazards linked to Crising and the southwest monsoon.
