Tropical Depression Crising Set to Strengthen Over Philippine Sea
Tropical Depression Crising is expected to develop into a tropical storm by Thursday morning as it gains strength over the Philippine Sea, sources said. This tropical depression is currently moving westward at 35 kilometers per hour and poses a growing threat to the region.
Located about 725 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes, Crising carries maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour with gusts reaching up to 55 kph. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) anticipates Crising will continue intensifying over the next few days.
Projected Path and Intensification of Tropical Depression Crising
According to local authorities, Crising is forecast to track generally west-northwest to northwest during the forecast period. It is expected to come closest to Northern Luzon by Friday evening, possibly intensifying into a severe tropical storm by that time.
Pagasa also noted the possibility of Crising reaching typhoon strength before approaching land. The system may pass near or make landfall over the Babuyan Islands, with a slight shift in its path potentially causing it to hit mainland Cagayan.
Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risks from Tropical Depression Crising
Residents in several provinces should prepare for heavy rains. From Wednesday to Thursday noon, areas such as Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, and Biliran are forecast to receive between 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall due to the tropical cyclone.
Additional Rainfall from Southwest Monsoon
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon (habagat) will also bring significant rain, dropping 50 to 100 millimeters across Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Zamboanga del Norte during the same period.
These conditions increase the risk of localized flooding, especially in urban, low-lying, and river-adjacent areas. Landslides may also occur in vulnerable locations.
Strong Winds Expected from Habagat
The habagat will bring strong to gale-force winds in coastal and upland areas. On Wednesday, gusty winds will affect Palawan, Camiguin, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, and the Dinagat Islands.
By Thursday, gusts are expected in Quezon, the Bicol Region, Mimaropa provinces, Visayas, Camiguin, Zamboanga del Norte, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands.
On Friday, the same areas will experience strong winds, with the Davao Region also included.
