Tropical Depression Emong Develops Near Babuyan Islands
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) confirmed on Wednesday that the low-pressure area west of the Babuyan Islands has intensified into Tropical Depression Emong. This latest development marks the fifth tropical cyclone to enter Philippine territory in 2025.
At 8 a.m., Emong was officially classified as a tropical depression. The weather agency reported it was last located 105 kilometers northwest of Northern Luzon, moving west-southwest at 35 kilometers per hour. It carries maximum sustained winds of 45 kph, with gusts reaching 55 kph.
Other Weather Systems Affecting the Philippines
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dante has strengthened and is now classified as a tropical storm. It was last observed 880 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon, moving north-northwest at 15 kph. Dante has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts up to 80 kph.
Aside from Emong and Dante, Pagasa also identified another low-pressure area outside the Philippine area of responsibility. This system has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
Warnings and Recommendations
The weather bureau advises residents and local officials to stay alert and monitor Pagasa’s updates, especially the 11 a.m. advisories for the latest forecasts and possible changes in the tracks of these tropical systems. Flooding caused by the southwest monsoon combined with the effects of Tropical Storm Crising continues to affect several areas, prompting vigilance.
Local leaders noted the importance of preparedness as heavy rains and strong winds may disrupt daily life and pose safety risks. Communities are urged to follow evacuation orders and safety protocols as necessary.
