Tracking Tropical Depression Fabian’s Westward Movement
Tropical Depression Fabian is gradually moving west-northwest and is soon expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility, sources said. Currently, Fabian is positioned approximately 290 kilometers west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, as of the latest 11:00 p.m. update.
Fabian carries maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 55 kph. Although it is slowly progressing westward, it is not likely to directly impact the country during the forecast period. Nevertheless, moderate seas are anticipated over the coastal waters of Northern Luzon due to Fabian’s presence.
Authorities forecast that Fabian will continue moving generally west-northwest until it exits the Philippine area of responsibility either tonight or early tomorrow morning. Afterward, it is expected to weaken into a remnant low-pressure area by tomorrow morning.
Podul Approaches Philippine Waters with Increasing Strength
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Podul has intensified slightly while moving west-northwest. Its center was located about 2,315 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon. Podul currently exhibits maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 105 kph, advancing at 15 kph.
Podul is forecast to enter the Philippine area of responsibility between late Sunday evening and early Monday morning. Upon entry, it will be locally named “Gorio.” Experts expect Podul to gradually strengthen, potentially reaching severe tropical storm status by Monday morning. There is also a chance it could intensify further into a typhoon by Sunday.
However, there remains significant uncertainty regarding Podul’s path and intensity from Monday through Wednesday, August 13. Any northward or southward deviation in its track could greatly affect its strength during this period, sources noted.
