Tropical Depression Lannie Develops West of Northern Luzon
A low-pressure area (LPA) west of Northern Luzon has intensified into Tropical Depression Lannie early Saturday morning, officials reported. This tropical depression is currently moving westward, bringing attention to its forecast track and potential impact on nearby regions.
As of 4 a.m., Tropical Depression Lannie was located approximately 315 kilometers west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur. It carries maximum sustained winds reaching 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts up to 55 kph. The system is advancing westward at a speed of 15 kph, according to the latest update from the state weather bureau.
Forecast Track and Expected Movement
Authorities noted that the forecast track for Tropical Depression Lannie indicates a general northwestward movement until Monday, September 8. Afterward, it is expected to veer west-northwestward for the remainder of the forecast period. The tropical depression is projected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Saturday morning or afternoon.
Forecasters also anticipate that Lannie will strengthen into a tropical storm between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Despite this development, no tropical cyclone wind signals or gale warnings have been raised so far.
Weather Warnings and Sea Conditions
Even without an official cyclone warning, the state weather agency cautioned residents about strong to gale-force winds affecting the Ilocos Region, Cagayan, and Isabela on Saturday and Sunday. These conditions are due to the southwest monsoon (habagat) being enhanced by Tropical Depression Lannie, local leaders noted.
Maritime conditions are expected to become rough, particularly in the coastal waters off the Ilocos Region, where waves may reach up to 3.0 meters. Meanwhile, moderate sea conditions with waves up to 2.5 meters are forecasted in the seaboards of Cagayan, Isabela, Zambales, and Bataan, community members said.
Preparedness and Caution Advised
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay alert and monitor weather updates as Tropical Depression Lannie progresses along its forecast track. The enhanced southwest monsoon may bring heavy rains and strong winds that could impact daily activities and marine travel.
Authorities continue to monitor the system closely and urge the public to heed warnings and prepare for possible weather disturbances during the weekend.
