Tropical Storm Bising Brings Rain to Northern Luzon
MANILA, Philippines — The trough of Tropical Storm Bising (international name: Danas) is set to bring rains across parts of Northern Luzon on Saturday, July 5, local weather authorities announced. The tropical storm’s trough is expected to cause cloudy skies and rainfall in the region.
After leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as a tropical depression on Friday noon, Bising quickly intensified. By Saturday morning, it had strengthened into a tropical storm with winds reaching up to 75 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts hitting 90 kph, according to a weather forecaster from the national meteorological agency.
The storm was last located approximately 480 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes, moving slowly westward. “The skies will still be cloudy, and heavy rains are possible over parts of Batanes and the Babuyan Islands. This is due to the trough of Tropical Cyclone Bising,” the forecaster said in Filipino during the morning forecast.
For context, a trough is an elongated area of low atmospheric pressure that often brings unsettled weather. “In the area of Batanes, we may still experience 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall within a 24-hour period,” she added, mostly in Filipino.
Bising’s Path: Re-entry and Exit from PAR Expected
The local meteorological agency also shared that Bising will turn northeastward towards Taiwan by Saturday evening. It is forecast to re-enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Monday morning. However, as it remains near the northwestern boundary of the PAR, the storm is also expected to exit the country’s monitored area later the same day.
“Within this time frame, we see a low chance of issuing wind signals over any part of the country,” the forecaster said in a mix of Filipino and English. Due to this, no gale warnings have been raised despite the storm’s development.
However, the agency cautioned about moderate to rough sea conditions over the northern and eastern waters of Luzon, with light to moderate sea conditions elsewhere around the country.
Weather Outlook: Rain Chances Across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao
Aside from the effects of Tropical Storm Bising, the southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, will influence weather patterns across the Philippines. The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and possible thunderstorms.
Similarly, the Visayas and Mindanao regions can expect partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to the same monsoon flow.
Aside from Tropical Storm Bising, authorities confirmed that there are no other low-pressure areas currently being monitored within the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
