Tropical Storm Crising Affects Thousands of Families
At least 7,500 families have been impacted by tropical storm Crising as of 9 a.m. Friday, local authorities confirmed. The wide-reaching effects span several regions, highlighting the urgent need for disaster preparedness across the country.
Reports from the Office of Civil Defense reveal that Mimaropa, Regions 6, 7, and 12 have reported the highest numbers of affected families. While Crising is expected to make landfall in Mainland Cagayan, officials emphasize that the entire Philippines must remain vigilant due to the storm’s influence on the southwest monsoon.
Monsoon Strengthens, Raising Flood Risks
The southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, is intensifying alongside Crising, increasing the risk of heavy rains, flooding, and landslides. “What we are really monitoring is the amount of rain the habagat will bring, which could cause flooding and landslides,” said a government spokesperson in Filipino.
To mitigate dangers, preemptive evacuations began Thursday in vulnerable areas, particularly in Regions 1, 2, and 3. Authorities continue to assess the situation closely as conditions evolve.
Storm’s Current Status and Forecast
According to the latest update from the national weather bureau, Crising was last located 135 kilometers east-northeast of Tuguegarao City in Cagayan. The tropical cyclone is expected to intensify further, reaching severe tropical storm strength by the next day’s morning or afternoon.
Officials also predict that Crising will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday afternoon, easing immediate threats to the archipelago.
Government Prepares Relief Efforts
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently inspected the readiness of relief goods at a national operations center. Three million boxes of family food packs have been prepared and stored in over 900 hubs nationwide to support affected communities.
The wrapping of these food packs continues at key disaster resource centers in Pasay City and Cebu. Authorities remain committed to ensuring timely assistance reaches those in need.
