Widespread Class Suspensions Due to Tropical Storm Crising
Several areas suspended classes on Saturday, July 19, as Tropical Storm Crising swept across the country. The storm, locally known as Crising, brought heavy rains and strong winds, disrupting normal activities. Residents and local officials closely monitored the storm’s progress amid challenging weather conditions.
According to sources, Tropical Storm Crising was last located approximately 125 kilometers west-northwest of Calayan, Cagayan. The storm carried maximum sustained winds reaching 85 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 115 kph. These conditions prompted precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
Class Suspensions Across Key Regions
Local governments quickly responded by suspending classes across various levels and institutions. In Metro Manila, all public and private schools in Manila City, Caloocan, Marikina, Taguig, and Valenzuela City halted classes. Valenzuela extended the suspension from kindergarten to college, covering both online and in-person learning.
Further north, Dagupan City in Pangasinan also suspended classes in all schools. In the Cordillera Administrative Region, Baguio City and La Trinidad paused lessons at all levels, including private and public institutions. La Trinidad clarified that the suspension did not affect any pre-scheduled school activities.
Additional Areas Affected
Central Luzon’s Bataan province cancelled classes at all levels. However, some schools adapted by shifting to asynchronous learning, while the Bataan Peninsula State University’s Graduate School continued face-to-face sessions. Meanwhile, Olongapo City in Zambales suspended classes for both public and private schools.
In Calabarzon, the entire province of Laguna also halted classes across all educational levels, public and private alike. These measures aimed to protect students and staff from the storm’s impact.
Storm Movement and Outlook
Authorities reported that Tropical Storm Crising was moving west-northwest at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Forecasts suggest the storm will continue on this path and is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday afternoon or early evening.
Experts also anticipate that Crising will strengthen into a severe tropical storm before it exits. Local leaders urged residents to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols as the storm passes.
